The Red Lion is in the village opposite the Post Office. It serves several cask ales and fresh home made food. There is a weekly quiz and a poker night, and monthly live music.

The Dexter is in Slaid Hill. It serves good cask ale and good-value food. The pub was named by Cecil Tetley who bred Dexter cattle in Shadwell.

Restaurants

Shadwell Tandoori is an Indian restaurant in Slaid Hill with a reputation for good food, friendly service, and good value.

The Beehive is a village restaurant in Thorner. The building used to be a pub with very good beer and no customers. The restaurant that replaces it has very good food and plenty of customers. Simply put, it is good value for money and a relaxing place to eat with good service.

There are several places to eat in Oakwood, including the excellent Bangladeshi-run Asian restaurant Rice and Timoney’s café.

There are also some to choose from on Street Lane in Roundhay, including the long-established Flying Pizza restaurant and an above average tapas restaurant Caffe Pera.

Takeaways

The obvious place for a decent takeaway is Shadwell Fish and Chip Shop.

In Slaid Hill Shadwell Tandoori serves good takeaways, and there is the Italian Medici Takeaway.

Canton Flavour is a very good Chinese takeaway restaurant on Street Lane in Roundhay.
